Grandpa Roy Column!! The Return!
Hey guys, Drew back here. It sure has been a while, but it is finally time for some more Grandpa Roy Trivia! So without any further motion, here is your question of the day...
Two weeks ago today, Justin Verlander threw his 2nd no hitter of his career, becoming the 228th pitcher in the modern era to do so. However, while over 40 players have thrown multiple no hitters, only 4 have thrown 2 in the same regular season. Who were these 4 players, and what teams did they throw their no hitters for?
1: Johnny Vander Meer, Cincinatti Reds (guessed by Joe)
2: Virgil Trucks, Detroit Tigers (guessed by Baseball Nut)
3: Nolan Ryan, California Angels (guessed by Ryan G.)
4: Allie Reynolds, New York Yankees (guessed by Baseball Nut)
Remember the rules, please guess only one person for every 24 hours, and have fun!
See Ya!

I'll take the easy answer off the board...
ReplyDeleteJohnny Vander Meer
Oh and he was on the Reds
ReplyDeleteTTM favorite Virgil Trucks for the Detroit Tigers
ReplyDeleteI can't remember for sure, but I believe Nolan Ryan did it for the Angels. Or maybe he did his in back to back years. After I post this I'm off to check.
ReplyDeleteRyan, you're correct - Nolan Ryan threw 2 in 1973. One of the other guys is Jim Maloney, I think.
ReplyDeleteYankee Great Allie Reynolds.
ReplyDeleteJoe, Baseball Nut (x2), and Ryan G are correct. Reivax, thanks for helping out Ryan, but although Maloney did throw a few no hitters, they weren't in the season. Good job guys though!
ReplyDeleteAfter posting, I verified the two-in-a-year, and noticed that after the two in '73, he had one each in '74 and '75. Four no-hitters in three years - figuring only Koufax has four in his career, and only three other players have three, that makes such a feat even more amazing.
ReplyDeleteYeah, isn't that neat? Cool find Ryan!
