Upper Deck Confusion.. The Always Continuing Saga

Hey guys, Drew back here. Upper Deck recently gave me my Harold Baines redemption autograph that I redeemed in July after a birthday gift, but that wasn't all. Just a few days ago, I received another shocking package from the good folks from Carlsbad, California! They sent me another letter, and it seems to be that there was confusion and they accidentally sent me the actual card plus a replacement. Here is the new card of equal value that is slowly adding up to the price of the actual box.

From 2009 Ultimate Collection (my 1st card from that set), an on card autograph numbered to 24 of former All Star corner infielder Dick Allen! Allen was a 7 time All Star, and played mainly for the Phillies, as well as the Cardinals, Dodgers, White Sox, and A's. He was the 1964 NL Rookie of the Year and the 1972 AL MVP! I read through his entire Wikipedia page, because I will admit I barely knew anything about the guy and was a little disappointed. But after getting into his outrageous power and run producing ability, I grew to really like this card!

This is one of my lowest numbered autographed cards, and it's really an amazing looking card. The autograph of Allen looks incredible, he has one of the sweetest sigs I've seen, and I'm a fan of the Ultimate Collection product! For basically free, I'm pretty pumped about adding an autograph of his to my collection! If anyone wants this more than I do, give me a Yankee autograph similar in value (or more value :D) as this card, and it could be yours. Otherwise, I might just hang on to it for now.

So, all in all, Upper Deck's customer service still kinda sucks for taking so long, but at least they were able to help a good customer in the long run! Thanks UD!

TTM #39- INCREDIBLE SUCCESS!

Hey guys, Drew back here. Just a few days ago, I finally, and by finally, I mean over a year of waiting, got this TTM back! And it wasn't just any player... take a look:

Not one...

Not two...

But THREE autographed cards from Yankees All Star pitcher CC Sabathia! When I opened this envelope, he was by far the last person I thought it could've been from! Two of the cards didn't come out spectacular, but that Allen & Ginter looks incredible. And please, I don't need information about prepping chrome cards, this was a year ago, and in case you didn't know you could rub an eraser on chrome cards as well as many other tools.

Anyway, Sabathia must've recently caught up on his mail, and I'm sure he had an awful lot to catch up on! He's won 157 games in his 10 year career, with an ERA of 3.57 and 1787 strikeouts. He has become possibly the best workhorse in baseball, and is a true model of consistency. He won his 1st World Series in 2009 with the Yankees and hopefully can lead them to many more!

My 1st Major Piece of Game Used Memorabilia!

Hey guys, Drew back here. Every once in a while, I like to branch out my collection a bit. It seems kinda boring to continually just add cards and occasional signed photos to your collection, so when I have the opportunity to mix things up, I very well might. So just recently, my good friend Anthony from the blog "Anthony's WPS and Vietnam Collectibles Blog" and formerly "Mike Pelfrey Collectibles" has been working on selling off his entire collection, including his incredible Mike Pelfrey cards. I've done a lot of business with him, and this just happened to be probably the best pickup yet! For a great price of $10, I got this wonderful new addition to my collection:

Anthony went to a Mets game about 3 years while former Yankees great Willie Randolph was manager. Randolph picked a ball off the ground, signed it, and tossed it up to Anthony in the stands! A stamp behind the autograph says Practice upside down, so obviously the baseball was used by either the Mets or the opposing team that day, which is really awesome. The ball is signed nicely on the sweet spot, and looks pretty nice in person! The baseball also has a lot of wear and dirt on it too, which is much cooler than a plain white baseball.

Willie Randolph was a great player back in the 1970's and 1980's, and was most known for being on the "Bronx Zoo" team featuring Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Lou Piniella, Bucky Dent, Chris Chambliss, Graig Nettles, Catfish Hunter, Sparky Lyle, Goose Gossage, Billy Martin as manager, etc. He was a 6 time All Star and a 2 time World Series Champion as a player. He was a key role player, with a great glove and great speed, often near the top of the lineup behind Mickey Rivers. After playing for several other teams and following his retirement, he was the base coach and bench coach throughout the Yankees incredible World Series run in the late 1990's. He spent 2005-2008 managing the Mets and was fired, and now currently will become the bench coach for this years Orioles!

He's certainly lived a life in baseball so far, and I'm a big fan! I'll make sure to keep the story alive Anthony and you know I'll keep good of the baseball. Thanks so much!

TTM #38- The Show I Watch Every Morning

Hey guys, Drew back here. With 1 more day of midterms, I may finally get back on track! Although I got an unbelievable TTM success today, I'm a little behind, so first I must share the previous success I got back! Check it out:

Yes, that is indeed a dual autographed card of Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic, the two ESPN analysts on "Mike and Mike in the Morning"! I made this custom card of the them one day due to the fact that I love their show, and I thought it would look amazing signed by the two. I imagined how cool it would be to own their autos, so I wrote a letter to them, and pretty much took a shot in the dark.

However, about 70 days after the card was shipped out, I got it back! And not only did it come out signed, it came out signed NICELY! Golic inscribed "ESPN 2" and Greeny had a solid signature as well. No bent corners, not weird spots on them, nothing. Perfection. I love it.

Anyway, if you haven't checked out "Mike and Mike in the Morning" and you can actually stand watching ESPN every once in a while, I highly recommend it for good interviews and analysis to start your morning off everyday. Nothing like 2 knuckleheads yelling back and forth at each other to get you pumped for the big day at work!

A Lot of Great Catch Up Mail!

Hey guys, Drew back here. It's that time again folks, the one where I have to show off all of the recent trades and acquisitions I've made with bloggers recently, because I'm too lazy to do them all separately! So, here goes, starting off with a package from Dan of Grand Cards. Dan was a Curtis Granderson supercollector during his stay on the Tigers until he was traded to the Yankees, and he decided to throw in a ton of Curtis' cards along with the trade itself.

The trade was for these cards above as well as the rest of the 2010 Topps Chrome Yankees set. My dad gave me the entire Chrome set for Christmas this year, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have all the Yankees separate from the set. My favorite cards in the set are probably Mantle, Cano, and Jeter, all 3 being very nice cards!

And here are just a few of the tons of Granderson cards he included! Granderson has been on a lot of really nice cards over the years, and I needed quite a few of these. I'm actually considering becoming a Granderson collector, to add to my Cano and Swisher collections. I have a lot of his cards now and he's a great young player!

But wait, there's more! Dan also felt like it was right to include this nice 2008 Topps Heritage Pants relic card, which was awesome! While I'm not the biggest fan of owning a piece of someone's pants, it's still a nice relic, and will fit in well with my other Granderson cards!

For the next package, we have stuff from Jim of Sixty Feet Six Inches. Jim wanted my Johnny Venters autograph from my Topps Update Jumbo break I recently did, and so he sent me these in return:

First, Jim threw in these extras. From the 2005 Upper Deck All Star Game Series, 2 Derek Jeters and an Al Kaline/Ivan Rodriguez. This is a pretty nice set!

From 2007 Allen & Ginter, a Mike Mussina white jersey relic. I've gotta say, this is a gorgeous card, everything about it was done well! Allen & Ginter relics tend to be my favorite design year in and year out and this is just another of a former Yankee great!

And lastly, the main highlight of the trade was this 2003 Upper Deck Yankees Signature Series Lee Mazzilli Autograph. I've been meaning to pick up a card from this beautiful Yankees auto set for a while now, and I finally have my hands on one! Mazzilli only played for the Yankees for 1 season (1982) and didn't have the greatest numbers for his career, but he was also the manager for 2 mediocre Orioles mid-2000's teams. He was also the 1st base coach for the Yankees from 2000-2003 and the bench coach in 2006, and was the lead studio analyst for the Mets SNY coverage a few years ago. It's safe to say that lee has covered a lot of ground in his long baseball career. Anyways, a nice auto and a nice card, sweet!

Next up is a nice Christmas gift I recently received from Ryan of "The Great O's Autograph Project". He told me he was going to send me some stuff and boy I guess he did!

Of the huge lot of Yankees cards he included, I only scanned my favorites. On this first scan we have a lot of sweet Mantles, and by far my favorite Roger Maris card I've ever seen. I also really like the Matsui Bowman Heritage refractor card, minus the fact that it's very miscut.

Here we have quite a few Don Mattinglys along with a few other 90's inserts of Bernie, Paul O'Neill, and a sweet Topps Finest David Cone. All of the Mattinglys pictured were needed and are all really nice cards, especially the 1992 Leaf Heritage Series Insert and the 1995 Topps Stadium Club. Starting to really get quite a nice Donnie Baseball collection!

Lastly, a 2005 Topps gold card of Jason Giambi /2005, and a whole lot more of 90's inserts and base. We have the 1995 Andy Pettitte/Ruben Rivera rookie card, and also a really shiny Ruben Rivera rookie! I really like the Bernie Williams card too, another nice one I needed.

Finally, last but not least is yet another package from Mr. Virgil Trucks Interviewer himself, William from foul bunt. As you know by now him and I are really good friends and he recently picked up another nice card to send my way as well as a copy of his interview with former pitcher Virgil Trucks! Here are 8 of 29 Topps Update cards I needed, that he decided to hook me up with. Unfortunately, I shouldn't have to have needed these cards, as the jumbo box should have provided most if not all of the set, but the doubles pile is overflowing. For some reason I really like the Giambi card.

And what better way to end this post than a sweet Mark Sanchez dual jersey /150 from 2009 UD SPX! I never got a chance to post about the Jets heartbreaking loss against the Steelers, and while I am angry that we didn't show up for the 1st half, I'm glad the team made it far, and Sanchez hasn't been too too bad in his first 2 seasons by any means. This is a beautiful card and even though the relics are event used, it's still worth staying in my collection for sure!

Amazing Jets Pickup for an Amazing Jets Game!

Hey guys, Drew back here. After a day dedicated to track, and being at a meet for 9 hours, and running for a grand total of 70.5 seconds, I am back. So, 2 weeks or so ago I bought an awesome picture on eBay, and it totaled out to around $30, which was a nice deal for his autographs! He is one of the bright stars of football and has taken his (and my) team to the AFC Championship for 2 straight years! Ladies and gentlemen, Mark Sanchez paid a visit into my collection!

First off, I absolutely love the photo of "The Sanchise". It is a perfect picture to display an autograph, and the autograph, as much of a disaster as it is, looks great on the photo! Now, here's the question, is this beautiful piece real?

It's no big name company, but it sure looks official. A matching hologram is on the back of the photo, and it sure seems like either it's real or a REALLY good fake. Sanchez seems to have a few similar yet a little different autographs, and this is one you see on a lot of his cards. On their website, it does say that all items were obtained in person or were from Steiner Sports, Tristars and Mounted Memories. Also, the company is from Los Angeles, California, the state in which Sanchez played college football in. Sounds pretty legit to me!

As of right now, Mark Sanchez is my favorite football player. He has showed a lot of positives, as well as negatives, but the team has been successful when he's on the field and he is great in a lot of clutch situations. That being said, in tonight's game against Pittsburgh he sure is going to have to be clutch in order for the Jets to win! I think the Jets are riding an awful lot of momentum right now and if they can control their minds from thinking about the Super Bowl and just trying to win, they can most certainly do it! I'm a little confident, but then there is that little feeling inside me that says "DREW YOU'RE A JETS FAN YOU CAN NOT BE CONFIDENT!" I hate that feeling, but it's truth. The Jets have famously choked an awful lot since that great Super Bowl 3.

I can't wait for tomorrow night, hopefully my boys will be heading to Dallas awful soon!

Upper Deck Situation Resolved.. FINALLY!

Hey guys, Drew back here. So, the day I received my DeAngelo Williams TTM auto, I received quite a few other things in the mail. One was a surprising package from the folks at Upper Deck. I've been very upset with Upper Deck's Customer Service lately, because for my birthday, IN JULY, my parents got me a tin of 2007 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic. In it I received 2 base cards of Gus Zernial and Bob Horner, 2 relics of Dennis Eckersley and Fred McGriff, and an expired redemption for a Harold Baines Sweet Spot autograph. I contacted Upper Deck on the redemption, and they did not have the card, so they said they'd get me a replacement and told me to wait the standard 8-12 weeks. Then, I emailed them 12 weeks later asking where my cards were, and they told me to wait 8-12 MORE weeks. Well, I waited 24 weeks (aka 6 months) and Upper Deck FINALLY came through, when we were about to call and complain. Here is what they sent me:

Nothing like a Harold Baines autograph as a replacement for a Harold Baines autograph. I mean, I can't complain considering this was the card and it's really nice, but I was kinda hoping for a nice Yankees card to add to my collection. Baines was actually better than most think he was, one of the more underrated players of his time. He played for 22 seasons with many teams, had 2866 hits, 384 home runs, and a career batting average of .289. He won a world series as part of the White Sox coaching staff in 2005, after going his entire career without a ring. Had he played for better teams, he may have had more consideration for the Hall of Fame, and would fit with the Jim Rice's and Andre Dawson's of his era.

This card on the other hand is really nice. It's numbered to 75, and the auto is on the glove in blue sharpie, which makes for a nice layout. For now, I'm planning on keeping this, but if you have a similar Yankee autograph I may be willing to trade it.

TTM #37

Hey guys, Drew back here. I've been trying to get back to my regular posting schedule but that school stuff always tends to come first and get in the way of that. Because of my studying and preparation for midterms, I won't be able to post much for the next week. However, I've gotten a TON of awesome stuff lately that I wanna share with you. I'll start with a TTM I got back yesterday, one that I thought would never come back.

None other than Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams! As awful as the autograph looks, I'm just reluctant for it to come home and be in tact. I sent out in August, so it wasn't too long ago, but rumors spread that he was done signing through the mail so I got a little worried. Sure enough immediately after the season ended the card came back signed! It took 160 days but was completely worth the wait!

DeAngelo is a 1 Time Pro Bowl running back, that coming in 2009, and he has rushed for 30 touchdowns since his rookie season in 2006. He's a great player, part of a great tandem when healthy with Jonathan Stewart. This season, he only lasted until late October, after spraining his foot. Stewart took over and rushed for 770 yards and 2 touchdowns on a weak Panthers team. Williams will be a free agent this year, so we shall see if they keep him or dump him.

I'm actually surprised the card came back ok, because I opened my mailbox to find a completely wrecked envelope, yet the cards were in there perfectly. Either thats what happens to old envelopes or someone wanted to take a peek at my mail. I always thought that mailman was suspicious!

Words Cannot Describe Last Night!

Hey guys, Drew back here. Yesterday, I went over to my friends house for a Playoff Party, and we had an amazing time! Of course, that would've been different had the Jets not pulled off an incredible upset on my least favorite football team, the New England Patriots! All the smack talk from those fans has diminished, and our smack talk is real talk. Rex Ryan talked an awful lot of trash all week, but, if that is how he motivates his players, then it works for me!

The Jets seriously played their hearts out last night, and brought Brady to the ground so many times. In my opinion, I've never seen a worse Tom Brady. He was my fantasy football quarterback this year in a league with my friends, and he led me to the Championship, in which I won! He had an incredible season, but, last night, he looked awful! He lobbed a bunch of passes and he just looked more like Mark Sanchez than himself.

Sanchez on the other hand was great, and he seems like he's starting to really get a grasp of the pressure filled games. He was 16/25 for 194 yards and 3 touchdowns, which was just enough to sneak past the Patriots. He seems really calm and cool in the pocket in big situations, which is a great sign for the future!

To all you Jets haters, watch out! This is the second straight year we've reached the championship game, and we have some major momentum right now, beating Peyton Manning AND Tom Brady! Super Bowl or Bust!

2010 Topps Update- NEED HELP!!!

Hey guys, Drew back here. This year, I decided to take on a challenge and attempt to complete the 2010 Topps 990 card complete set. So I bought boxes of all 3 series, and the only one that gave me trouble in completing the set was the most recent release, the Updates and Highlights set. I'm pretty sure I still need about 85 cards, as the jumbo box as you may remember produced as many doubles as singles. Mariano Rivera's Replacement..

Hey guys, Drew back here. Yesterday, the Yankees signed former Tampa Bay Rays closer Rafael Soriano to a 3 year, $35 million dollar deal. While this is good for the Yankees, and I'm very happy to add this All Star closer, it's kinda sad to see. Of course, Mariano Rivera has been one of the, if not the greatest, closer of all time, and he just discovered his replacement when his new contract expires in 2 years. Rivera has saved 559 games for the Yankees since he first came up with the team in 1995, and has been one of the most consistent players to ever take the mound. The signing of Soriano almost means that the end is near for Rivera, one of the most beloved Yankees of all time.

However, Soriano could be a nice replacement. Last year in his best season yet, he was 3-2, with a 1.73 ERA and an American League leading 45 saves for the Rays. He has become one of the top closers in the game, but will now have to settle as a set up man for 2 years, waiting for the Sandman's time to end. He is 31 years old now, so when he does get his chance, he will be coming towards the end of his prime, which could be a problem.

I'm pleased with the pickup I guess; I think it was important to get a Soria or Soriano to bolster the bullpen, which we surely needed. Many expert analysts say that the Yankees now have one of the top ranked bullpens in baseball, which is so great to hear after last year's disaster. I'm also glad that they finally were able to get a nice addition, as this offseason has not been the best we've done by any means.

1960 World Series Customs!

Hey guys, Drew back here. I recently got into watching the MLB Network broadcast of the 1960 World Series Game 7 that they dug up from Bing Crosby's; a former singer and actor and part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates; estate. They had a special live airing of the show in which Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson, Pirates outfielder Bill Virdon, and Pirates shortstop Dick Groat were on stage with Bob Costas being interviewed as the game progressed. Also in the crowd stood former Pirates champions from that team, and the widow of Roberto Clemente. It was a really good show, and so I decided to make some customs of the Pirates and Yankees from those teams. Check them out!

I'm not done yet, as I still need to do Hall of Fame cards for Mazeroski, as well as a few other players from the teams, but let me know what you think of them!

Check Out My Cards Pickups

Hey guys, Drew back here. Over the past few months, I've done a lot of buying on Check Out My Cards.com. It's a great website for buying and selling cards, and is a nice alternative to eBay. I bought a Christmas gift which you will soon see if you read foul bunt, and I bought myself 3 other cards for my collection. Here they are:

First, I picked up an auto of A's young pitcher Gio Gonzalez. Gio has been a pretty good pitcher throughout 3 seasons, with a record of 22-20 and a just over 4 ERA. He was touted as a top pitching prospect and was included in deals that sent Jim Thome to the White Sox, and what sent my favorite player Nick Swisher from the A's to the White Sox. Gio has been one of many young stars on Oakland, and I'm predicting a breakout year this upcoming season. For about $4, I figured why not, and took it.

This A's pitcher has a lot better resume thus far into his career, and was in talks for the 2010 American League Cy Young Award. Trevor Cahill had an 18-8 record last year with a 2.97 ERA, and his career win-loss is 28-21 with a 3.76 ERA in 2 seasons on Oakland. He made the All Star team last year, and is regarded as one of the top young pitchers in baseball. This card was maybe $5, so I got two A's young guns autos for less than 10 bucks.

So on my baseball team last year, we had a kid named John on it. He wasn't the best player by any means, but he certainly kept us entertained and was a great teammate of mine. His grandpa is former Reds, Braves, Phillies, Yankees, and Cardinals pitcher Jim Konstanty. Konstanty was the 1950 National League MVP and was selected to the All Star team that year. He won 16 games that year for "The Whiz Kids" and saved 22 games. His career record was 66-48, with a 3.46 ERA and 76 saves. He died in 1959 in Oneonta, New York, not too far from me. I saw this card of him in a Yankees uniform, and for a few bucks, I knew I had to pick it up for the Yankees vintage collection!

Overall I'm happy with these purchases! If you haven't checked out Check Out My Cards, please do! It's highly recommended!

Trip to the Card Shop- Nice Vintage Pickups!

Hey guys, Drew back here. A week or so ago, my dad and I went out to a card shop that we normally don't go to, because its often very unorganized and takes forever for them to find prices, etc. I've pulled that Dexter McCluster letterman auto from a month or 2 ago, as well as that Chipper Jones Baseball Heroes patch autograph numbered to only 15! So, we had a lot of time on our hands, so we decided to get a few packs and also check out the little boxes of mixed cards. First, I'll start with the packs. Not very impressive in my opinion, let me know if you're interested in any of these outside of some of the 2010 Topps inserts (ie: Turkey Red, Vintage Legends, CYMTO, Tales of the Game, Peak Performance). Which leaves the Larkin, Mauer, and Suppan inserts for trade and most of the base.

However, we weren't done. I bought 4 singles that added up to around $20.

First, a 1991 Upper Deck Heroes Baseball Hank Aaron hologram card! I don't have a whole lot of Hank Aaron cards and it was only a dollar and it looked really cool, so, I got it.

A 1957 Topps Hank Bauer! This card isn't in great condition by any means, but it's nice enough for me. Bauer was one of many parts that led to the Yankees World Series run in the late 40's and early 50's, and for only a few bucks, I couldn't turn it down. I'm not a huge fan of the 1957 design, I think it's kinda boring, but it's not a bad card by any means.

Next is a 1964 Topps Elston Howard! Elston was no Yogi Berra, but he could catch really well, and his number was retired by the Yankees in 1984, 4 years after his death. Elston made 12 All Star teams, won 6 World Series, and was the 1963 AL MVP. This card is really sweet looking, and it's in excellent condition! For only a few bucks, no doubt this was a great deal.

And finally, a 1961 Topps Duke Snider! Duke is becoming a player that I wouldn't mind collecting more of, especially after I got him through the mail and got that autographed card from dad. I saw this in the bin, and it looked really nice even the borders were damaged. So, for about $5, I got it!

Also in the bin, we saw a few 48 Bowmans, which certainly did not belong in there, so we put them in the pile, but dumbo at the card section decided why not check book value before I buy them. A half hour later, and they were re-priced to $30 a piece. I was also looking at a $5 Keith Hernandez auto, but that was repriced to $15, and I wasn't paying that for a Met.

Complete Autograph Set? Yes Sir!

Hey guys, Drew back here. A few nights ago, I was talking to my buddy William about my new autographs from my dad, the Jim Palmer and Duke Snider ones. He said I should consider doing the set, so I checked eBay to see who else was in the set. I had a few already, and oddly enough, those 2 plus the 2 I just got were the only cards to be found! And after checking Beckett, Check Out My Cards, it seems that I have completed the 1994 Nabisco Legends Autograph Set!

So, in this set, there are 4 cards, all autographed by Hall of Famers. They include mini seperate certificates of authenticity and are one of the first autographed sets produced. 1993 was the 1st year Nabisco did these, and I have the Catfish Hunter autograph from that set. As far as these players go, you can't get a whole lot better than them! Bob Gibson was one of the most feared pitchers of the 60's, and his 1.12 ERA in 1968 is a Major League record! Jim Palmer won 268 games for the Orioles, and was one of the top 70's pitchers. Frank Robinson hit 586 home runs over 21 seasons for the Reds, Orioles, Dodgers, Angels, and Indians, coming close to 3,000 hits. And Duke Snider was one of the greatest center fielders of all time! Combined between the 4 players are 37 All Star appearances and 9 World Series championships! Wow!

Dad got me all 4 cards at some points, from the same sellers, and boy is that a nice set to have or what? Next up is 1993 Nabisco, let's do it!
